There will be a new Neil Peart dvd coming out before Christmas. 'Anatomy of a Drum Solo'... Showing lots of Rush footage tracing the evolution of his solos. Coming out from Hudson. May be pretty cool.
Subtitled: 'From Cool to Corny'. Just kidding I love Neil no matter what he does.

someone please explain the neal peart thing to me....i am baffled.

i have seen clips from his videos and from a sabian thing and to me he plays like a beginner, stiff and horrible. now i know he is a rock drummer and there is nothing wrong with playing simple, but it seemed particularly rusty with an overwhelming response from the public - he is a legend. someone please tell me why.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm with you Louie.... From what I've seen of Neil, nothing he has done has impressed me in the slightest. Not in terms of chops or technique, but general musicality and phrasing. I have never liked his touch and feel on the kit and I have a couple of young students who get a nicer sound from the drums!

His attempt at Big Band playing was simply farcicle.... why is this guy so highly regarded?

I wasnt around at the Era when Rush was really popular and have checked out only a couple of tracks...but i think what makes Peart legendary to some people (not saying this is my view) is that he just come in at the right place at the right time....Rush i believe was one of the first Prog rock bands and since they become popular he was probably the reason why a lot of people started drumming! He was probably a lot of begginers idols (and then they found Vinnie, Dave, Dennis, Omar, Steve, Hassy, Marvin, Tain and etc)

I mean i started cos of blink 182 and travis barker and from them moved to falling in love with Mike Portnoy...now if it wasnt for the interest that Mike portnoy inspired for drums in me i would have neverr gotten to know Vinnie and others! Even when i was a fan of mike i still didnt know what a session musician was and wasnt aware of their existence...but he inspired to research and check out more drum stuff which im most thankful for but i now dont particularly like his playing

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is a completely understandable response if you watch the Sabian video or BRMS. Those are not great examples of what makes Neil so influential to some.
The real answer to the question is the music of Rush. If you really want to understand why Neil is respected so highly in some circles it is because of his contribution to progressive rock within the context of the music of Rush. I mean specifically the drum parts he has composed for that music for 30 years. Now, if you are not into Rush or progressive rock you may not be into him.
I recommend checking out the following albums:

2112
Hemispheres
Permanent Waves
Moving Pictures
Exit Stage Left
Signals

Put it this way, even Dave Weckl or even Steve Gadd or Vinnie could not put on the show like Neil did for years and years and is still doing.

The guy is a frickin MACHINE.

Neil is about performing for thousands of people in arenas and making them feel like they got their money's worth. It's not necessarily about technique.

I have a bass player friend who also doesn't like Neil's playing but he tihnks Neil is the best arena rock live show drummer he's ever seen.

Jazzers prolly wouldn't understand or care. Especially British ones. j/k

I heard that ESL and the P/G vids are to be released on DVD sometime soon too.

Check out the RUSH albums listed above.

Listen- don't watch. Before MTV and DCI music videos, listening to a RUSH album provided the inspiration for many drummers. Neil is highly regarded for a reason.

Check out the MUSIC- then decide.

As far as Neil and the Jazz thing...pretend it never happened.

When Rush and Neil Peart came along in the 70's, their brand of progressive rock was new and fresh. What Neil did behind the kit utilizing crotales, tubular bells, the huge kit, was amazing, all in a musical context.
2112, The Tree, La Villa Strangiato, were killer pieces of music on vinyl.
Now to watch them in concert was a whole other story of power.

Yes, Neil is stiff and hard to watch, but what they brought to rock/progressive music can't be touched.

Growing up, Neil was indeed an idol, just as much as Jeff Porcaro and Keltner and Gadd and any other amazing drummer that came along.

I like Neil's phrasing, esp on MP. I think it's really musical and logical. It's inside the music, it takes a litle listening to hear, much like Tony's could be.
